10 minutes with Stuart Trevor

10 minutes with Stuart Trevor

With an instinct for design and the creativity for production, Stuart Trevor has the credentials and vision to take a concept and turn it into an international business. Which he first did as founder and visionary behind All Saints and then Bolongaro Trevor. He is also known for his ground-breaking work at Reiss and has dressed bands including The Kings of Leon, The Libertines and Kasabian. His latest creation is the brand ‘Immortal’ where he was asked by film maker, Maggie Monteith, to create a concept brand inspired by film. We caught up with the entrepreneur to find out what makes him tick outside of his work.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Normally it would be David Bowie however my girlfriend has just reminded me about Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez!
She’s a breath of fresh air in a political world that fucking stinks!

What would you change your name to?

Trevor Trevor - all my life people keep calling me Trevor, even people I’ve known for 20-30 years and thought we’re more than just associates call me Trevor.
Close friends don’t believe it until they hang out with me for a day and then laugh out loud when it happens 2 or 3 times

What is the most interesting thing you’ve seen/read this week?

The BBC documentary on Peggy Guggenheim, mainly for her having saved so many works of modern art from Paris before it would have been destroyed by the Nazis - there’s a section on how the French evacuated everything from the Louvre 3 days before they turned up in Paris and hid them in various Chateaux all over France and she managed to get everything over to New York on a ship, whilst there were U boats sinking ships every day etc...
She also supported/mentored many young artists of that time including Jackson Pollock. Her and her family were pretty atrocious people, especially as parents - her whole life story is however incredible.

What’s the most useless talent you have?

Pretty good at Dad Jokes.

What would be a good theme song for your life and why?

David Bowie’s Heroes - just because it’s one of my favourite songs and I’m still trying to be a hero, even if it’s just for one day.

Do you speak any other languages?

I used to say English, Yiddish and Rubbish but I am pretty fluent in Pigeon French, German and Italian.

Are you good at accents?

Yeah - I used to spend a lot of time in Italy and find that if you can assume the accent they understood you a lot better.

What is your favourite place in the world ?

Well I love Japan for their culture and food however I love diving and the best diving I’ve ever been lucky enough to do was in The Maldives which is also pretty much as close as you can get to Paradise.

3 things you can’t live without when you travel and why?

Louie, Sissi and Harper my beautiful kids.

Biggest regret in life?

Well, I don’t regret anything really, however there was one person who I wish I’d never met - he ended up buying All Saints from me when it was all going so unbelievably well.
I would still be running the business today if I’d not allowed him into my life.

What is the one thing that you wish you could do to look after the environment?

Eradicate all plastic bags, bottles and packaging from the planet - I’ve seen rivers in Indonesia 20 years ago full of plastic bags and bottles all going out to sea and I’ve seen beaches and dive sites all over the world completely ruined by this and this all should have been addressed decades ago - yet every fashion brand and supermarket still wrap virtually everything in plastic.

Best advice you’ve been given?

The day I started All Saints in 1994, I was offered the role as Creative Director for Club Monaco, moving to New York and setting up their design team/studio etc…
I told the owner that I had just agreed to set up my own label and he said he was absolutely gutted however he told me to go off and give it a go as he once launched Club Monaco and I shouldn’t miss that opportunity. He said I could always come back and see him if it didn’t work out.

If you weren’t scared what would you do?

I’m not scared of anything

What do you do to cope with stressful situations?

Get on with it

Go to fashion look?

Black frock coat, tee shirt and scarf - it used to be a black dinner jacket - works well with everything - jeans, combats, joggers.
