Happy International Women’s Day. Ladies, get your gloves on!

IB, founder of brand Lola Tara, talks to Blowout about her journey as a model, business woman and fashion designer. She gets in to the boxing ring in her gorgeous designs, showing us how its done or specifically- how its worn. She throws a few punches and says:

I am a woman, a daughter, a friend & a sister. I am fierce but kind, strong willed but reasonable, bold but sensitive. I have dreams and a clear vision of the kind of woman I strive to be. I don’t back down without a fight but also love with my whole heart.

Its Women International Day. What does that mean to you and your work?

This time is a reminder of what women have had to go through to be recognised, appreciated and respected. We’ve had to work twice as hard to get half as much. It is a time for self-appreciation, support of our fellow women and respect for the strong female silhouettes in our lives. They’ve all made us who we are today and I couldn’t be doing what I am doing without the women before me who helped pave the path that allows me to shine.

Tell us why and how you ended up in the fashion industry

I’m Nigerian born, American-raised with a global soul. The dream to be involved in fashion was birthed as a child. Browsing through my mother’s pattern books brought me so much inspiration. My brand was launched after my experience as a fashion model and completion of my Business and Marketing degree. I have always been a creative and being able to see raw ingredients come to life until today lights my heart on fire.

How is Lola Tara different from other similar brands?

Lola Tara isn’t comparable to anything else out there. Lola Tara doesn’t compete with anyone but herself. She is unique just by being.

What is the one thing you’d like to be remembered for?

As a person, the way I made the people around me feel, my unapologetic honesty,

my devotion to the people in my life. As a brand, the special events of our customers lives’ that we were able to be a part of, the way we made people feel wearing our clothes and the little part we took in the global change of the fashion industry.

What is it about the way you do what you do that you think separates you from others?

I try and lead my life without the concept of fear. I try and follow my intuition and I also seek out honest and critical feedback from the people around me that I respect. As a brand we are trying to do things our own way, a way that avoids waste and disposable fashion. We are pushing forward, listening to our clients and our own instinct of what is missing out there.

How do you positively contribute to our environment and “helping the planet”?

Lola Tara is a slow-fashion brand. This means that we don’t focus on trends or what’s “hot” at the moment. Each piece is intended to be a useful part of your wardrobe for years to come. Each piece is intended to be worn in a variety of way, situations and seasons. Classic, versatile while being stylish.

Who is your inspiration?

I take inspiration from every story. I am inspired by those who followed their dreams and never gave up. I’m inspired by those who find innovative ways to positively impact the life of those around them. I’m inspired by those who can make something out of nothing. I’m inspired by those who have overcome tragedies yet have thrived beyond what their environment told them.

What has kept you sane during these strange times?

Prayer, mediation, my mother and staying creative.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

I love to travel, cook and read.

What’s your favourite “life Quote”?

Closed mouths don’t get fed. Don’t expect people to read your mind & don’t be afraid to ask. The worst that can happen is that you get a “no”.

What’s next for you?

More creating, more distribution channels, strategic partnerships and global outreach.
